What More Did You Need

Fifteen years old with fear in her chest, old enough to know when a hand should have left, young enough to need every grown-up near, but the room went quiet when she named the fear. She did not wait for memory to bend, did not need six years to know what it meant. She moved when her body said get away now, found the door that safety allowed. You can ask why later, you can search intent, you can weigh every word and what somebody meant, but the first true witness was the way she moved, fear in her body before anyone proved. A child should not have to carry the case, should not have to make every adult face what should have been obvious when she came through the door. If a voice could have asked, then the method had choice. The question was never what was there, but why reach like that. I failed her too, I will not pretend, I was not the shelter I should have been then. I was working, surviving, missing the signs, thinking love was present while losing the time. So I will not stand from a perfect place, I bring my failure into the same light of grace. But failure cannot be our excuse, if she spoke then, we owe her truth. We do not heal her by softening cost, we do not find peace by explaining what was lost. We stand where we should have stood before, beside the girl who ran to the door. She does not need permission To know what she felt. She does not need a courtroom To say she needed help. She does not owe us silence To keep the family whole.
