Adults in the Room

Adults in the room, but the child held the weight, everybody had a reason, everybody moved late. She came in shaking with the truth on her face, and we searched for language that would lower the stakes. We measured the moment by what we could bear, not by the fear that had driven her there. A house can keep standing while trust comes apart, and silence can sound like a responsible heart. We were old enough to see. We were old enough to move. We were old enough to ask What safety had to prove. Where were the adults in the room When the child had to run? Where was the shelter she needed When the damage had begun? We cannot call it wisdom When comfort takes the lead. Adults in the room Should have asked what she needs. Not every failure comes wearing a cruel face, sometimes it comes dressed like keeping the peace in place. Sometimes it sounds like calm down, breathe slow, let us talk tomorrow, let the hard thing go. But a child should not have to wait for the room to agree, should not need perfect words to be believed. The question is not whether we felt afraid, the question is why fear made the child pay. She carried questions That belonged in adult hands. She carried silence No child should understand. She carried distance. She carried blame. She carried the fire While we softened the flame. I will not stand here clean, I will not stand above, I confused provision with presence and absence with love. I missed the smoke until the house was flame, then wondered why distance kept calling my name. But repentance has feet, it does not just cry, it walks to the wound and refuses the lie. If we failed her before, then we answer it now, no more lowered eyes, no more peace with a bowed-down mouth. Where were the adults in the room When the child had to run? Where was the shelter she needed When the damage had begun? We cannot call it wisdom When comfort takes the lead. Adults in the room Should have asked what she needs. No more asking the wounded to carry the proof, no more hiding behind what we failed to do. She ran, she told, she locked that door. Adults in the room should have done more.
