Testify · Track 02

Testify

Promises, titles and remembered service are brought into the same light as the care actually given. The song's force depends on truthful examination rather than exaggeration. It makes a demand of the speaker as well as the person he is addressing: repentance must reach habits and people, not remain a declaration. Jesus is asked to search the account and govern the witness's anger. He supplies the truth to which every title, excuse and claim of love must answer. Love must bear truthful witness through conduct, and a demand for another person's repentance also exposes the witness's own excuses.

Lyrics

Testify! Let the truth hit the light. Every promise, every question, Every time we were passed by. Jesus, tear the cover off; Let our words and deeds collide. You can call me son— But love must testify! Friendship only shows in adversity; Who stays when love becomes responsibility? You loved the work, the songs, the steady hands; Who held the worker when he couldn't stand? I served through grief; I stood beside the flock; Then came the hurt your words alone couldn't stop. You named your labor; I won't wipe it clean; But tell me what you did with pain you'd seen. Don't cast stones from your borrowed throne; Don't call the weight you leave with us our own. I didn't ask for crowns or center stage; I asked for care that made it off the page. Count the meals. Count the meetings. Count the questions left behind. Count the ones you passed by. Put the promises beside the work. Put the title in the light. How can I declare it? LET THE NUMBERS TESTIFY! Title. Honor. Credit. Clean hands. Who pays the price when comfort makes the plans? You crossed my bounds, then called it loving care; Fear saves its face by dressing up as prayer. Your written plan said care would come each week; I needed more than words when I was weak. If "under construction" buys another day, Who holds the wounded while you look away? Jesus, search the record. Don't let anger bend the truth. I won't erase the good; I won't hide the harm from You. If I demand repentance, Let it tear through my excuses too. Testify! Let the truth hit the light. Every promise, every question, Every time we were passed by. Jesus, tear the cover off; Let our words and deeds collide. You can call me son— But love must testify! Make repentance more than language. Make it reach the wounded lives. Search my hands and search his too; Let the truth testify! Count the meals. Count the meetings. Count the ones you passed by. No more hiding in the title. LET OUR LIVES TESTIFY!
